Anything For The Experience; Paying Thousands For Food
For many people, food is a great way to connect with other people and enjoy all that life has to offer, which is why you’ll find that the food industry is one of the most profitable businesses. From dining out at a small outdoor space to lavish restaurants with over-the-top dished-out food, there is a special world out there for anyone who is looking for a good time and some good food.

However, the dynamics are changing, and there is a whole new aspect to dining out. Just head over to New York City’s Serendipity 3 restaurant that offers the famous Golden Opulence Sundae. Now, you may know what a sundae is, but what makes the Golden Opulence so special is the fact that the chocolate syrup is made from melted Amedei Porcelana.
It is the world’s most expensive chocolate, and it is literally covered in gold. No wonder the desert is priced at a whopping $1000. So, what makes people want to spend this kind of ridiculous amount of money at fancy restaurants like this? Is it the unmatched quality, the undeniably great ambiance, or the experience? Find out more below.
Worth the experience
Chantha Thach, a personal trainer, found herself trying out the desert after her aunt and cousins had ordered it as a surprise during their visit. Thach commented on how expensive the desert was and stated that $1000 could easily be someone’s house rent. The desert was shared amongst Thach and company, which came up to $170 per person. Despite being still extremely overpriced, Thach considers the desert to be the best that she has had in her entire life and that it was worth the house rent.

The Most Expensive
In a regular setting, at the price of this Golden Opulence Sundae, you can easily have ten full-course meals at decent restaurants. This brings in the question: is the experience worth experiencing? For most people, it is, and this is why places like Serendipity 3 have specifically designed dishes like these.
The restaurant currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive dessert, the most expensive sandwich, which comes up to $214 for a grilled cheese sandwich, and the most expensive milkshake, which is a $100 served in Swarovski crystal encrusted glass. In July 2021, they launched the world’s most expensive french fries. Priced at $200, these fries are blanched with Dom Perignon champagne, truffle oil, truffled cheese, shaved black truffle, and truffle salt.

Understanding the logic.
To understand this phenomenon of people spending outrageous amounts of money on food, one should understand human nature of constantly seeking out the best and the most unique. These dishes are expensive, but they provide a unique and memorable experience that is not readily available for everyone else which makes money a secondary priority.
