Agnes Gund – “Masterpiece” by Roy Lichtenstein ($165 Million)
Described as a “patron and advocate for underknown artists” in a 2021 ARTNews piece, the acclaimed art collector Agnes Gund also deals with art that’s far from obscure. A great example is “Masterpiece,” one of Roy Lichtenstein’s best-known works, which she sold from her private collection to the hedge fund manager Steve Cohen for an eye-watering $165 million. The multi-million sale was reported in 2017 by many outlets, including NPR.
The famously philanthropic Gund announced that $100 million out of the $165 million she made with the sale would go to the Art For Justice Fund, a cause very near and dear to her heart.
