Eric Clapton – “Abstraktes Bild (809-4)” by Gerhard Richter ($34 Million)
In 2022, the guitar virtuoso Eric Clapton made headlines all over the world after comparing vaccinated people to victims of “mass hypnosis.” And while you may find this controversial remark to be, erm, underwhelming, you’ll certainly have to agree that Clapton knows how to turn a profit in the art market. And by profit, we mean selling art for ten times the price he originally paid for it!
In 2012, Rolling Stone magazine reported that Clapton sold his “Abstrakets Bild (804-9)” painting by Gerhard Richter for a whopping $34 million at a Sotheby’s auction. Remarkably, Clapton bought the painting for a “mere” $3.4 million in 2001.
