Into Another Dimension
The Covão dos Conchos in Portugal’s Serra da Estrela mountains may seem like a gateway to another world, especially in this aerial photo. However, this is a man-made reservoir that was constructed in 1963 to provide water for hydroelectric power plants in the area.
The reservoir is the largest of its kind in Portugal and can hold up to 42 million cubic meters of water. The lake itself was formed by damming the Conchos River and is situated amidst rugged limestone mountains and rich vegetation. Despite being a human-made structure, the Covão dos Conchos blends seamlessly with its surroundings, creating a breathtaking sight for visitors and locals alike.
