Floating Kingdom
The kingdom of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, is not an ethereal floating city, as this aerial photo almost made us believe, but a fortified village surrounded by ancient walls and towers. This is perhaps why UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
The island was previously difficult to reach during high tides before a causeway was built. The site is also famous for its eighth-century oratory, built by St. Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, following a vision of the archangel St. Michael. Despite not floating high above the clouds, the island is still a magnificent sight to behold, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world.
