You Won’t Believe What This Couple Discovered in their Creepy Basement During Home Remodeling
Architectural trends may come and go, but DIY home renovations have remained popular with folks everywhere. From peeling off layers of old paint to polishing old wood floors till they gleam, the joys of bringing an old house to life are immensely rewarding. Sometimes, a derelict residence can even unveil an odd secret or two for its new occupants.
When a newlywed couple from Ohio started repairing their ’40s-built home, they came across an unexpected find. They never imagined coming across something like this in a small old house. Read on to discover their story, which is nothing short of an emotional roller coaster.
An Ordinary Fixer-Upper
In the Greater Cleveland Area, 35-year-old Reddit user Branik12 and his wife purchased a 1940s fixer-upper. Branik12 calls himself a “do-it-yourself house remodeler,” but for the purposes of this narrative, let’s call him Adam. Once he and his wife had made the purchase, remodeling work could begin, and they started.
The couple desired a complete top-to-bottom rehaul, so they started with the first and second levels, as anyone would. After finishing those, it was time to go into the basement. Confident in their ability to renovate, they could never have predicted the events that would take place while trying to refurbish the basement.
Derelict and Creepy Down Below
Their job was made difficult by a basement that looked like something out of a horror movie. The area was pretty big, dimly lit, and particularly cold due to the concrete floors. On the other hand, Adam was not one to be thwarted so easily and regarded it as a fantastic opportunity to create something beautiful.
Old, crumbling plaster defaced the basement walls, ruining them. There was no way to save what was left because the stone cinder block behind it was visible. So he decided to start by demolishing the walls. Little did Adam know he was about to make his first startling discovery in the basement.
Strange Scribblings on the Walls
Adam started working on his new project right away. He slowly chipped the plaster off the wall, exposing more of the stone underneath. Eventually, he observed something on the rock that had survived for years as chunks of the ancient substance that had till now protected the markings from the elements dropped to the ground.
“We peeled back the walls and revealed some random writing and drawings,” Branik12 wrote on Reddit. He also included some images of his find, revealing odd names and doodling. Despite the increasingly unsettled feeling in his stomach, there was nothing to do but continue with the project.
Level Two
It was not at all enjoyable for Adam to tear down the barriers. He nevertheless succeeded in completing the entire underground space. The ceiling was the following step. The remodeler hoped this point would be the last surprise in the endeavor. But regrettably, things didn’t turn out as planned.
Adam remarked on Reddit that there was a good quarter-inch of dust on the ceiling. After exposing and then patching the air, the couple put up plastic to keep the dust out of the rest of the house.” Adam anticipated this would be a messy step in their project but was unprepared for just how exhausting it got.
Checking the Ceiling
The couple had fun working together to renovate their house. Despite the mess downstairs, this task was relatively more straightforward than the other home improvement initiatives they had carried out. There were fewer things to move about in the primarily empty basement.
The space started to take shape gradually, but it took its toll. Adam now regretted even beginning the project in the first place after working on the ceiling. But nothing could have possibly prepared the couple for what would happen next or what they would soon discover above their heads. Their creepy basement had only just begun revealing its secrets.
